Powell is served by the Olentangy Local School District, which includes 15 elementary schools, five middle schools, and four high schools. The area now known as Powell was first settled around the year 1801, two years before Ohio became a state. It was originally called “Middlebury” because the first settlers arrived from the Middlebury, CT area. In 1857, Judge Thomas Powell established a post office in the community, so the residents decided to name the town after him. The town experienced growth when the railroad was constructed through that area. Powell was officially incorporated as a municipality in 1947. The population remained low until the late 1980s, when residential development expanded from the Columbus metropolitan region. Over the span of 20 years, the population rose from less than 400 to over 6,000 people.

It serves as a bedroom community for Columbus, as Powell is situated approximately 17 miles from the heart of downtown. The residents of Powell and city officials are focused on preserving the historic nature of the city. Therefore, Powell does not host any major industrial, financial, or technological businesses.
