The land that is now known as New Albany was founded in the center of Plain Township in 1837 by Nobel Landon and William Yantis. The land was divided into lots measuring 50 feet by 100 feet and sold to new settlers. Many believe the name “New Albany” came about because some of the original settlers migrated from the Albany, NY area. Throughout its history, the community has also been known as “Hope.”
In 1856, New Albany was officially incorporated with a population of 50. By 1970, the town was much smaller than it is today, only consisting of a small portion of Plain Township that did not touch Columbus. At this time, access to State Route 161 from I-270 was reconfigured, allowing easier access in and out of town.
